Since its inauguration in 2000, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has been held every three years. The rural area where the triennale is held is known for its heavy snowfall and distinctive 'Satoyama' agricultural landscape, expressing human co-existence with nature. Today the area is suffering rapid ageing and depopulation. Based on the premise that human beings are part of nature, the festival aims to reveal the latent values of the region using art as a catalyst to communicate these values to visitors, and to find a way to revitalise the region. For the 7th edition, in addition to over 200 existing works created by global artists such as Marina Abramovic, Christian Boltanski, Cai Guo-Qiang, Anthony Gormley, Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama and many more, about 160 new works have been created.
