Nuit dates from the period when Abdessemed was living in the ghetto suburbs of Lyon, and it evokes the social tensions of that setting. Abdessemed asked a hunter and gun enthusiast to fire at twelve metal plaques made for the occasion. The irregularly perforated plaques were designed to be installed overhead like a hanging corridor, so that the outside light filtering through them created the effect of a starry night.
Nuit presents the beholder with a striking artistic experience, namely the beauty of a star-studded sky in which there nevertheless remain recognizable traces of an act of aggression against the material. Regarding this piece, Abdessemed has mentioned his discovery of how widespread weapons were among residents of Lyon’s suburbs. For him it represented an outer sign of inner violence, fuelled by social exclusion and lack of a future. AM
