Adel Abdessemed

On the pavement of rue Lemercier, which Abdessemed often used as an extension of his studio, we see his wife, Julie, walking arm-in-arm with a skeleton, who faces the viewer. The picture immediately comes across as a vanitas, a depiction of the inevitable passing of time and youth, inviting the viewer to consider spiritual matters. Here, however, Abdessemed has decided to eliminate macabre overtones by setting his figures in full sunlight and linking them in a playful, complicit way—the skeleton seems to be whispering a secret, of which we remain ignorant, in the lady’s ear.
