Mappemonde

Adel Abdessemed

Made by North African craftsmen from the recycled metal of tins of food or canisters of dangerous substances, Abdessemed’s Mappemonde series are mass-produced even though each one is different. Variations in size, color, and composition do not alter the immediate image of the “world map,” even if the geography differs on each. Here Abdessemed pays tri- bute to Alighiero e Boetti, whose woven carpets of the 1970s led to poetic and prophetic reflections on globalization. The tins in Mappemonde testify to the worldwide spread and consumption of certain products—and the uniformity that ensues. GC
