Happiness in Mitte

Adel Abdessemed

Done in the Mitte neighborhood of Berlin, where the artist was living at the time, this work consists of seven short video pieces shown in loops on monitors. In each piece a cat hungrily drinks from a bowl of milk placed on the blue floor of an empty paddling pool. Nothing about the cats’ condition is indicated, whether wild or domesticated. The camera simply records the way they leap upon the milk, filming their poses and their wary gazes at the lens as it approaches or withdraws. The title refers to the feeling of happiness produced by the unexpected satisfaction of an instinctive need in the midst of the anonymous, open space of an empty pool. Mitte is the area where Abdessemed lived with his family when staying in Berlin. The seven video pieces, during their first presentation in Tokyo and subsequent shows, were scattered along passageways or placed next to works by other artists. AM
