Fire spaceAdel Abdessemed
An airport baggage cart, painted orange-red, was loaded with wood and set on fire; what remains is the cart with its incongruous cargo of charred wood. Fire Space is a strange object, the fruit of an absurd en- counter of two objects that do not go together, but whose colors seem to have run together. Thus the black of the coals invaded and colored the metal of the cart.
The title alludes to the “hearth” of a home, while the object itself evokes more aggressive themes related to the context of airports, places of extreme tension in today’s society with the constant fear of accidents and terrorist attacks. A question arises from this juxtaposition of burnt wood and baggage trolley: How far can society go in immunizing itself without turning it into a self-destructive act?
The theme of fire recurs frequently in Abdessemed’s oeuvre, such as Adel Abdessemed Je suis innocent (2012) and Printemps (2013). GC
